BERNIE SANDERS

Sam Frizell’s Sept. 28 cover story on Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign divided readers–mostly along political lines. Susan Frommer of Murrieta, Calif., praised TIME for featuring on the cover “a candidate who speaks to the concerns of ordinary Americans,” though she viewed the way the article referenced his socialism as a “dig.” Those with less affection for Sanders had different reactions. Reba Shimansky of New York City, for example, said the juxtaposition of Democratic candidates was “another example of Hillary bashing.” But one Sanders opponent found a way to appreciate the piece anyway: “Thank you for the cover story,” wrote O.A. Griffey III of Shreveport, La. “It is a perfect example of why I am a Republican.”

AMBITIOUS WOMEN

Kristin van Ogtrop’s feature on the fraught relationship between women and ambition drew praise from readers like Madhukar Vale of Houghton, Mich., who lamented that women are asked to fit a male-oriented corporate system. As a result, she wrote, “attitudes such as ambition that are complimentary for men [are] pejoratives for women.” Van Ogtrop’s story was based on results from the second annual TIME and Real Simple poll about women and success, and coincided with a live event in New York City. There, at a panel discussion, Today show host Savannah Guthrie declared her dislike of the word ambitious. “I hate the word,” she said. “I think it’s impolite.”
