With Amazon Prime Day around the corner, here’s a simple strategy that can save you $60 a year at the world’s biggest online retailer: you can cut the cost of an Amazon Prime membership in half by signing up for Amazon Household.
That’s right — two people who have separate Amazon accounts can share their Prime benefits with one another, at no additional cost.
It usually works best when you share it with someone you live with, like a spouse, a relative, or a roommate. Amazon Household lets you add two adults and up to four teens and four children. There are parental controls to limit kids from shopping and to decide what content they can see.
When you sign up for Amazon Prime, you can pay either $12.99 per month or $119 per year.
If you’re currently paying $119 annually and so is your spouse, that’s a total cost of $238 for both memberships. With Amazon Household, it would cost half of that — $119 for two people or $59.50 per person.
Amazon doesn’t say how many subscribers it has in its loyalty program, but recent estimates put it at 112 million. If you don’t have an Amazon Prime account, you can start a free trial that lasts for 30 days without making a year-long commitment.
But if you do plan to use your Prime benefits for more than a month and happen to live with others, this is a simple hack that can save you money over time.
How To Share Your Amazon Prime Benefits
As long as you’re comfortable sharing your payment methods with another person, it’s actually pretty easy to set up an Amazon Household account.
You may be sharing your Amazon account with another person, but you still won’t be able to see the other person’s purchase history or order information. One caveat: if you leave the shared account, you’re not allowed to join another for 180 days.
The perks that come with Amazon Household include free, two-day shipping, streaming of digital content, early access to exclusive deals, and access to more than 1,000 books.
Here’s how to share your Amazon Prime Benefits:
- Go to the Amazon Household page.
- To create your Household, click one of the three options: add adult, add child, or add teen. You’ll be asked to log in.
- Once you’re logged in, you can either send an email invitation, or you can both sign up together to verify your accounts.
- Once everyone has been added to the account (adults, teens, and kids), everyone can reap the benefits.
